Halfway through this recording, my girlfriend and I split up. That's incidental.
Leeds, my hometown - which, believe it or not, I once enjoyed living in - is full of beards working the bars; and, more men with beards, drafted in from wherever they grow the beards, then talk about important things like music/culture/the-things-that-bind-us-all-together in terms of quicksand-like, fast-depreciating monetary value. It's a shit business.
High Romance is a gesture of dreaming and wanting. And then not getting. There are struggling clowns schitzing out, housewives who think their name is someone else's when it's spelt backwards, and a really long one about a really long party at a squat in Holbeck (before they gentrified it).*
P.S. I should say now that our piano player keeps his beard trimmed.
*The title of which is Cubist Blues, which is a record by the late, great Alan Vega; the late, great Alex Chilton; and Ben Vaughn. My friend Alex interviewed Alan before he passed and he said it was fine to use. The record was playing at the party, by the way, about seven years ago. It still sounds great and you should give it a listen.
