In 2017 Das Pain was asked to perform at the opening night of Scalarama Leeds, before their screening of Jobriath A.D., a documentary celebrating the life and work of Jobriath, “Glam Rock’s Lost God”.
The film was to be screened at Left Bank Leeds, a cavernous early-20th century deconsecrated church with beautiful Gothic revival architecture.
Performing Jobriath’s songs was always going to be a challenge given this environment and, more critically, the gulf between his music and ours.
We listened to Jobriath’s entire back catalogue, selecting songs and reworking them to fit the evening’s intimate setting, choosing to concentrate on the fragility at the heart of his music. When you scrape through the stardust and glitter, they're wonderful songs that more people need to hear.
Almost a year later, we returned to Left Bank and recorded the songs with Jeff T. Smith (Living Body) as closely as possible to how we performed them on the night.
